Strokes can affect anyone. However, people of South Asian and Afro-Caribbean heritage are reportedly more likely to suffer from strokes. And South Asian people tend to have a higher rate of younger strokes.
If you or a loved one have had a stroke, you will understand that it completely changes the way you see things and your ability to do things. At ph.therapy, the foremost aim of our stroke rehabilitation is to get you up and moving as quickly as possible.
Swift and effective rehabilitation can be a tall task as strokes affect nerves which take the longest time to heal. This is why our neuro physios will give you the most up to date information – to help you understand the rehabilitation process so that expectations and goals will be met over the course of time. We’ll seek to understand what’s most important to you and from there, we’ll create a step-by-step goal ladder to help you achieve your desired outcome or as close as we can to it.
We are holistic with our care, so if you are hard of hearing we will make ourselves heard; don’t you worry – (Physiotherapists are a loud bunch!). If you are struggling with vision, we will adapt the way in which we deliver to you your rehabilitation plan so you know what you’re doing away from sessions as that’s where a lot of the magic happens.
It is often said that after a year post-stroke you will not make any improvements. Although it’s true that the sooner you receive neuro physiotherapy the more effective and quicker your recovery will be, at PHT we have discharged numerous patients that are even 2 years post their stroke, so please don’t limit yourself. In fact, new research has shown that after 10 years or more, your brain can create new nerves (neuroplasticity) to help you to move in ways you have not been able to before, if you’re guided correctly.
Things Ph.therapy do better than anyone else, and the reason we are leading in our stroke rehabilitation:
We treat with; care, compassion and integrity. We stay up to date with new research and new treatment methods.
We communicate simply and effectively to ensure the stroke survivor and their families understand all information that we share about their condition and their progress. We’re able to tailor our treatment to best suit people with cognitive impairments, speech and language difficulties and personality/behavioural changes. We understand that not many people have the knowledge of how to manage a stroke – that’s why we make it part of our job to guide you and your family as much as we can, in line with our ‘people centred care’ ethos.
The first step? Booking an initial consultation with one of our neurological physiotherapists. In this initial session, we will do an assessment; guide you on how physiotherapy will best work for you; advise you truthfully on what you expect outcomes can look like, and we’ll send you away with a bit of homework to start your rehabilitation journey as soon as possible. Finally, in this initial session we will also do a bit of treatment, as we believe each contact with you should count!
Our ‘people centred care’ ethos means that ultimately, we are here to serve you. As such, we just need what you’d like to work towards and if possible we will guide you there!
We understand that it’s sometimes difficult to make it into the clinic, so if you are in our covering area we can come and see you in your home. We also understand that neurological physiotherapy can be expensive, but for us to be able to give you the most up to date treatment, to therefore get you to your goals quicker we have to charge as we do. We do however, ensure that we keep all of our home visit sessions the same price no matter your location in our covering area. This is as well as offering you a 10 session follow up session bundle. See our pricing for more information.
