Post Operative

Understanding about post operative

Whether you’re about to go for surgery or you’ve just been discharged, ph.therapy is here to help you in clinic or at home. For example, a lot of the post-knee replacement clients we treat in clinic have had their surgery months or even years ago but have self-assessed that something isn’t quite right. It may be that they’re still in pain or they haven’t got a full range of movement in their knee. Having seen and discharged many of you before, we are the best at treating you, so that you can get back to your independence: whether that’s playing with your grandchildren, managing to do the shopping or just getting out and about.

There are 1000s of hip and knee replacements happening on the NHS or privately each day.

Treatments to expect

If you’re planning an operation, we’d advise a schedule of intense but crucial physiotherapy from the day you arrive home post-op. Usually 3 months down the line, we’re then likely to see you once every 2 weeks just to ensure you get the full range back in your knee.

We will get you off a zimmer frame or walking stick as soon as we think you’re safe, ready and confident. We ensure that you’re on a thorough rehab plan and that you know which exercises you should be doing each day so that you can move around with a little less pain and stiffness. We also give you advice you wouldn’t have thought of like how to position yourself in bed and how to manage your swelling so that you’re in less pain.

But enough about hip and knee replacements! We also treat many of you who’ve had complex injuries, post road traffic accidents, sporting injuries or polytrauma (when you’ve suffered multiple fractures). Insurance companies get in touch with us to manage a lot of their most complex cases and we always deliver excellent, efficient care.

Whether you’ve had rods, plates or screws placed into your foot, thigh, shin or arm, we can help you.

If you have ACL reconstruction, or meniscus repair surgery or even have a labral tear to your hip – we want to get you walking, back your daily function, or back to sport.

What to expect?

There is no universally accepted proof of the exact benefits of pre-hab (the rehab that comes before having a surgery), but we found a positive correlation between use of pre-hab and the speed of client recovery post-operation. This is likely due to muscle memory. During surgery, the muscles that are cut through automatically get weaker and those surrounding them too as you cannot move them as much. However, if you have built strength into these muscles before surgery, your brain will be able to send signals to those muscles to activate them with more ease, and the muscles themselves will be able to adapt themselves to grow a lot faster post surgery. We’ve had your average person to consultants at clients to get them ready for surgery (pre-hab), right through to their post surgery ‘rehab’!
