Parkinson’s Disease

Understanding about parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, which means that it affects the brain and it continues to get worse with time. Over 10 million people around the world suffer from the condition (according to the Parkinson’s Foundation). PD affects men more than women and is on the rise in line with our ageing population – in fact most people get Parkinson’s after the age of 65. Here at ph.therapy we call it Parkinson’s as people with ‘Parkinson’s’ have reported ‘Parkinson Disease’ has a negative connotation.

All ph.therapy neurological physiotherapists are members of the ACPIN (Association of Chartered Physiotherapist in Neurology), and they are also members of the Parkinson’s excellence network and attend regular courses to stay up to date with new ways to treat and up to date research. Our lead neuro physiotherapist, is amongst one of the innovators of creating new ways to help people with neurological conditions stay active, working with Neurological Charities to make rehabilitation accessible.

Treatment at ph.therapy

Again, with Parkinson’s you will be assigned to a neurological consultant (they will help you manage your medication) and hopefully you will also be assigned to a Parkinson’s nurse (they are really helpful for getting to know you and help you manage your condition). Both of these people will recommend you participate in daily exercises – which is where we come in. Get in touch with us at ph.therapy and ask for a neurological physiotherapist. We’ll help you to slow down the progression of your symptoms.

We also understand that it can be difficult to motivate yourself/participate in exercises at home on your own. Hence, we run ph.therapy exercises classes for people of all abilities… with more to come as we continue to grow. Come and join a class – we’d love for you to be a part of our journey, and us part of yours!

How do our neurological physiotherapists help you?

How it works

All you need to do is book an initial consultation with one of our neurological physiotherapists. In this initial session we’ll do an assessment; guide you on how physiotherapy will best work for you; advise you truthfully on what you expect outcomes can look like; and we’ll send you away with a bit of homework to do to start your rehabilitation journey as soon as possible. Finally, in this initial session we will also do a bit of treatment, as we believe each contact with you should count! Our ‘people centred care’ ethos means that ultimately, we are here to serve you. As such, we just need what you’d like to work towards and if possible we will guide you there!

We understand that it is sometimes difficult to make it into the clinic, so if you are in our covering area we can come and see you in your home. We also understand that physiotherapy is an investment, so we provide bundle options for long term care to make it easier for you.
